Conjunctions are the words that join other words or phrases within a sentence. They also join separate meaningful sentences.

E.g.
  • Ganesh and Govind are watching TV.
  • Is that boy fat or thin?
  • I trust him because he is honest.
  • He is very rich, yet he is not happy.
  • His brother passed the exams as he worked hard.
Here, The words and, or, because, yet, as are conjunctions.

Coordinating conjunctions are the words which connect two words or groups of words with similar values. They may connect two words, two phrases, two independent clauses or two dependent clauses.

E.g.
  • Her pleasent looks and gentle manner got her job.
  • Roy is poor but honest.
  • She is kind, so she helps people.
  • He may be in the room or on the terrace.
  • Rocky wants to become a doctor, for he is studying biology.
Here, The words and, but, so, or, for are coordinating conjunctions.

 #  Subordinating Conjunction :

Subordinating conjunctions are the words that join two words, phrases or sentences which are unequal in importance and rank. The words, phrases or sentences joined by subordinating conjunctions are dependent on each other.

E.g.
  • They will be happy If you come over.
  • Because I was late to class, I was punished.
  • Whenever the door opens, the dog runs outside.
  • Do you know the person who came to deliver the parcel?
  • I couldn't contact him since he was absent.
Here, The words If, Because, Whenever, Who, Since are Subordinating conjunctions.

πŸ“Œ Note : The subordinating conjunction does not always come between the two clauses it connects. Often, it comes at the beginning of the first clause.

until to express time Wait until I come back.
since to express time It's been five months since we last met.
because to express cause or reason He was punished because he was late.

as to express cause or reason She may not climb the stairs as she is old.
lest to express result in the negative He works hard lest he should fail.
that to express result He is so weak that he cannot walk.
if to express condition If you contest the election, you'll win.
unless to express condition You won't pass unless you study sincerely.
though to express contrast or concession Though he is rich, he is humble.
when to express time They were sleeping when I reached there.
wherever to express place The puppy follows me wherever I go.
therefore to express condition He had a fever therefore he did not go to school.

Correlative Conjunction are the paired words that join words, phrases or clauses which are equal in importance and rank.

E.g.
  • Both Karan and Cyrus enjoyed the film.
  • Indian food is not only delicious to eat but also beautiful to look at.
  • His grandfather could neither read nor write.
  • He will be either in the room or in the hall.
  • No Sooner had I left the house than it started to rain.
Here, The words Both....and, not only....but also, neither.... nor, either.....or, No sooner.... than are correlating conjunctions.

Compound Conjunction are small expressions that join words, phrases or clauses. Some compound conjunctions are so that, as soon as, as though, as well as, even though, etc.

E.g.
  • We got home as soon as you called up.
  • I invited her as well as her parents.
  • Sam went there so that he could see everything for himself.
  • He behaves as if he is a king.
  • I will not get angry even though you are rude to me.
Here, The words as soon as, as well as, so that, as if, even though are compound conjunctions.
