Q. While travelling in a train, it appears that the trees near the track are moving whereas co-passengers appear to be stationary. Explain the reason.
Ans. When we see the trees from a moving train, their position is changing with respect to us. Hence they appear to be moving. On the other hand the position of co-passengers is not changing with respect to us, hence they appear to be stationary.

Q. How are the motions of a wheel of a moving bicycle and a mark on the blade of a moving electric fan different? Explain.
Ans. The motions of a wheel of a moving bicycle and a mark on the blade of a moving electric fan are different as the wheel of a moving bicycle depicts circular as well as rectilinear motion whereas a blade of a moving electric fan shows only circular motion.

Q. Boojho was riding in his bicycle along a straight road. He classified the motion of various parts of the bicycle as

Q. Why do we need standard unit for measurement?
Ans. We need standard unit for measurement to make our judgement more reliable and accurate. For proper dealing, measurement should be same for everybody. Thus there should be uniformity in measurement. For the sake of uniformity we need a common set of units of measurement, which are called standard units. Nowadays SI units are used in science and technology almost universally.

Q. Explain how you will measure the length of any curved line?
Ans. A curved line or surface cannot be measured by a straight scale, a measuring tape or thread must be used instead. 
# To measure a curved line using a thread, follow the below steps :
a) Tie a knot at one end of the thread.
b) Place the thread at the beginning of the line and try to measure a small initial portion of the line which is relatively straight.
c) Place your thumb at the other end of the measured portion and measure next straighter portion.
d) Repeat the above step till the end of line is reached. Make a knot at the end of the line.
e) Now, straighten the thread and measure the length of the two knots on a scale.

Q. A car travels from city A to city B covering a distance of 200 km. It then comes back to city. Calculate the total distance travelled in meters.
Ans. Total distance covered 
= 200 + 200 km 
= 400 km
= 400 x 1000 m (1 km = 1000 m)
= 4,00,000 m

Q. The height of a person is 20.05 m. Express it in cm and mm.
Ans. 
1 m = 100 cm
20.05 m = 20.05 x 100 cm = 2005 cm

1 m = 1000mm
20.05 m = 20.05 x 1000 mm = 20,050 mm

Q. Convert the following :
1. 1 cm = _____ mm
2. 1 dm = _____ m

Ans.
1. 1 cm = 10 mm

Q. Four children measure the length of a table which was about 2 m. Each of them used different ways to measure it.
(i) Sam measured it with a half meter long thread.
(ii) Gurmeet measured it with a 15 cm scale from her geometry box.
(iii) Reena measured it using her hand span.
(iv) Salim measured it using a 5 m long measuring tape.
Which one of them would get the most accurate length? Give reason for your answer.
Ans. Salim would get the most accurate length. The reason is that in this case the length of the table can be measured in one go because the measuring tape is longer than the table. In the other cases the chance of making an error is higher due to multiple measurement. In case of Sam, he can measure the lengths which are exact multiples of half a meter.
