Making a magnet : Take an iron strip and place it on the table. Now take a bar magnet and place one of its poles near one edge of the strip of iron. Without lifting it move it along the length of the iron strip till you reach the other end. Now lift the magnet and bring the pole to the same point of strip from where you began. Repeat this process about 30-40 times. Bring some iron filings near the strip and observe that the strip attracts the filings. This indicates that the iron strip becomes magnet. A compass is a small case of glass. A magnetised needle is pivoted inside the box. The needle can rotate freely. Compass also has a dial with directions marked on it. The compass is kept at the place where we want to know the directions. When the needle comes to rest it indicates north-south direction. The compass is then rotated until the north and south marked on the dial are at the two ends of the needle. Usually different colours are used to point the ends of needle to identify the north and the south poles.

Q. When, where and by Whom the first magnet was discovered ?
Ans. The first magnet was discovered around 800 B.C in Greece by an old shepherd who lived on Create Island named Magnes.
Q. What is a magnet? Mention their classification.
Ans. A magnet is a substance that has the property of attracting objects made of iron, cobalt and nickel. On the basis of their occurrence, the magnets can be classified as:
(a) Natural magnets
(b) Artificial magnets.

Q. Can we isolate north pole or south pole of a magnet? Give reason.
Ans. No, we cannot isolate north pole of a magnet from its south pole or vice-versa. If we break a bar magnet into two halves, we will not get a single north or south pole but two magnets each with its north and south poles.

Ans.  A U magnet is stored in a wooden box with a soft iron placed at the edge. A bar magnet is kept in pairs with opposite poles facing the same direction and separated by a wooden block. The two edges of the magnet are joined by soft iron bar.
Q. What is a magnetic compass? State its use.
Ans. A magnetic compass is an instrument that is used to find the directions. Different directions (north, south, east and west) are marked on the compass.
Q. You are given a magnet with no markings, indicating its poles. How can you identify its poles by using another bar magnet with markings?
Ans. The location of the poles of the magnet can be determined by suspending it freely. A freely suspended bar magnet always points in a north-south direction. Ans. Electrical appliances such as television, mobiles, CD, and computers have magnetic storage devices as well as other electrical circuits inside them. When we bring external magnets near these appliances, the external magnets will interfere with the components of the appliances and can damage them.
Q. How a piece of iron can be magnetized by single touch method?
Ans. In single touch method rub the iron piece on a magnet for several times, the iron piece will be magnetized.
Q. How will you test that ‘tea dust’ is not adulterated with iron powder?
Ans. It can be tested whether tea dust is adulterated with iron powder or not if we use a magnet. We move the magnet over the tea dust then if it's adulterated, iron powder will be attracted to the magnet and if it's not then magnet will come out clean.
Q. Three identical iron bars are kept on a table. Two out of three bars are magnets. In one of the magnets, the North-South poles are marked. How will you find out which of the other two bars is a magnet? Identify the poles of this magnet.
Ans. Take the magnet with North-South poles marked. Keep it close with both the iron bars, and both will be attracted to it as both are magnetic. So test each of the two magnet bars one by one for repulsion test. If the first bar you took, repulses the marked magnet bar then it is the second magnet bar. The magnets attract and repel both, while iron only attracts.

Q. How was magnet discovered?
Ans. Once upon a time in Greece, there lived a shepherd named Magnes. He used to take his herd of sheep and goats to the nearby mountains for grazing. He used to carry a stick with small piece of iron attached to it for controlling his herd. One day he was surprised to find that he had to pull hard to free his stick from a rock on the mountainside. The rock was a natural magnet that attracted the iron tip of the shepherd’s stick. This was how magnet was discovered. Such rocks were given the name magnetite, perhaps after the name of that shepherd.
Q. Where are the poles of bar magnet located? Suggest a method to locate them. Draw a diagram.
Ans. The poles of bar magnet are located at its two end point. 
Method to locate the poles of bar magnet: 
Step 1. Place the bar magnet on piece of paper. 
Step 2. Sprinkles the iron filling on the bar magnet.
Q. List the properties of poles of the magnet.
Ans. Some very important properties the poles of a magnet are :
1. A freely suspended magnet always comes to rest in the north-south direction.
2. Attraction is maximum at the poles of a magnet. It is because these points have maximum magnetic strength. On moving towards the centre, the magnetic power keeps on decreasing.
3. Both the poles of a magnet have approximately same capacity to attract.
4. Two poles of a magnet can never be separated. This means that the poles of a magnet always exist in pair in a piece of a magnet.
5. Similar poles repel each other while the opposite poles attract each other.
Q. What are the uses of magnets?
Ans. The uses of magnets are as follows :
1. ATM, credit and debit cards have a magnetic strip that stores information and enables transactions of money.
2. Magnetic recording devices such as VHS, audio cassettes, computers, floppy disks and hard disks have magnets for recording data.
3. Magnets are used in junk yards to separate iron objects from other waste materials.
4. Magnetic compass is used to find directions. It has a small magnetic needle at its centre.
5. Maglev or Magnetic levitation trains have been developed in America, China and Japan. These trains are without wheels and move a little above the rails. The trains are pulled by the magnetic force that acts on the rails.

(a) Identify the diagram and name the process.
Ans. It is single touch method of making magnet. Single touch method is one of various ways of making a magnetic material like soft iron into a magnet. In this method one end of the magnet (say north pole) is placed at one end (say end A) of the iron piece and then rubbed over the bar from end to other (say end B), then lifted and brought back to first end.

(b) How does this method affect the alignment of particles in the needle?
Ans. The continuous stroking will align the magnetic dipole domains in the iron bar identical to the pole with which the bar is stroked. i.e., the left end of the iron bar being rubbed with the north pole of a bar magnet results in forming a north pole at the left end.

(c) What kind of magnet will be produced by this method? Why?
Ans. Permanent magnet is produced as its magnetism lasts for longer period of time.
